With some screeshots, this article explains how to texture an object in Gmax.
The process is the following one:
select the object in Gmax, open the material editor et create a new material..
Then, select a "diffuse" texture et apply it to the object.
Now, each face of the object is textured with the whole texture.
In the Modify tab of Gmax, you have to add an "Unwrap UVW" modifier and select each face to edit it and fit the texture.
These different steps are shown in the screeshots joined to this article (with comments in French, but I’ll post translated screenshots as soon as possible).
